Geological History
Pittsboro mines metavolcanic rock, approximately 550 to 660+ million years old, of the Central Carolina Slate Belt. Originally formed as successive eruptions and flows of volcanic magma cooled into layers, the rock was later compressed and folded during one of the tectonic events of continental collision. Pittsboro mines a green-colored andesite utilized on site by 3M for the production of roofing shingle granules. The plant also blends volcanic tuffs with other volcanic types for aggregate use.
