Luck Stone started the Powhatan plant in 1985. Located eight miles west of Midlothian on Route 60, this plant has played a large role in the development of Chesterfield and Powhatan counties. With the extension of Interstate 288 through this area, the Powhatan Plant is poised to play an even larger role in the future. Powhatan has won the National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association’s Quarry of the Year Award and its Showplace Award.

Geological History
Powhatan mines a metavolcanic rock formed in the early Paleozoic time (500 million years ago). Occurring first as a volcanic flow of molten magma, the rock underwent a geologic metamorphosis, causing the minerals to become more distinct. The many fractures and joints throughout show how the formation was later intensely folded. Overall, the rock is green-gray and fine-grained in texture, but has visible red feldspar (orthoclase) and quartz.
