Geological History
Rockville mines a metavolcanic rock formed in the early Paleozoic time (500 million years ago). Occurring first as a volcanic flow of molten magma, the rock underwent a geologic metamorphosis, causing the minerals to become more distinct. The many fractures and joints throughout show how the formation was later intensely folded. Overall, the rock is green-gray and fine-grained in texture, but has visible red feldspar (orthoclase) and quartz.
