The Prince Edward quarry is located in the Virginia Piedmont Province and mines an igneous rock described as biotite granite-gneiss. This Cambrian age rock is over 500 million years old and was emplaced in its present location by tectonic forces causing continents to collide and push bands of different rock types deep into the Piedmont forming a northeast trend to the geology. Prince Edward granite-gneiss has a granite composition with a gneissic linear fabric of thinly banded light and dark minerals. Clear quartz and white feldspar comprise lighter bands while black biotite and purple garnet create darker colored layers.
